Harley Email Digest

How to Configure 'Plain Text' Email

This helpful set of information has been provided by contributions from other HeD subscribers.

If your exact Email program/version is not mentioned here, please read some of the other examples anyway. The concepts are VERY similar to all Email programs. Understanding what you need to accomplish and poking around the Settings of your Email program should lead to success.

You probably came here because you got a reject notice from the Automated article software when you tried posting a message to the digest.

Even though you do not see it when viewing your own Email, many modern Email systems put a lot of formatting information, quite often in the form of web language called HTML, embedded directly amongst the words of your messages. Some Email programs even put two copies of the text inside a message. One copy containing fancier formatting than the other copy.

The digest does not accept attachments in messages. Attachments are things like pictures, music files, your documents from your Word Processing Software. In order to create an attachment, a lot of the undesireable formatting information is required to make the whole message work across the Internet. Unfortunately, even when not attaching something to your message, some programs still use the formatting structure for your mesages anyway -- even though there is no need or purpose in doing so. It is just laziness on the part of the Email program's developers.

Below are a set of links for various brief help tutorials and descriptions on how to set up various popular Email programs to send only plain text messages.

Some of the tutorials may provide extra detail to allow you to send plain text to the Harley Email Digest, but still allow pretty, richly formatted messages to be sent to others. This all depends on the capabilities of your particular Email program.

Note:
Please do not Email the Harley Digest list-manager asking for help or clarification on these instructions. His standard response will always be "ask the maker of your Email software for help." Because, quite frankly, there are some bone-headed Email programs out there and the list-manager has no time or money to get them, install them and learn how to use them just so you can send a normal and widely acceptable format of Email.
Think of this as a basic-skills Email entry test.
